Time to Strategize: Essential Tips for Small Businesses. Angela Rakis of Favorite Daughter LLC

As a business consultant, I am dedicated to helping small and independent businesses thrive. This month, we'll focus on the critical role of business strategy in achieving long-term success.

There have been times in my career, especially in my consulting work, where folks don’t like the word ‘strategy.’ Is it because it’s boring? It’s not the sizzle and spice of running a business? Too corporate? The truth is, it’s likely the approach to developing a strategy that makes it feel overwhelming and, therefore, underutilized.

In my early days of advertising, part of my role was to write the creative brief. This document helped the creative team develop their wonderful ideas - what we’d call "content" today. Sometimes the creative ideas would fall flat and our Creative Director would say, “Your strategy is showing.” This meant that they got the idea of what the client was communicating, but they didn’t deliver the message in a creative and compelling way. It was a cautionary phrase indicating that the strategic maneuvers were becoming apparent to others, possibly reducing their effectiveness. I did not envy the creative team.

Let's explore what a business strategy is, why it’s important, and how you can start developing one today.

What is a Business Strategy?

The textbook definition: a business strategy is a comprehensive plan developed to achieve long-term goals and maintain a competitive edge in the market. It encompasses setting objectives, identifying the best ways to achieve them, and aligning resources and actions accordingly. Effective strategies provide a clear direction, help with decision-making, and align efforts across the organization (Harvard Business School Online) (Waymaker.io). No wonder folks don’t get excited about it!

Why is a Business Strategy Important for Small Businesses?

  1. Direction and Focus: Without a strategy, small businesses may find themselves making ad-hoc decisions that don’t contribute to long-term success. A strategy provides a clear roadmap, ensuring every action taken aligns with the overall goals of the business.

  2. Competitive Advantage: A well-thought-out strategy helps small businesses identify their unique strengths and leverage them to stand out in the marketplace. This can include differentiation through unique products or services, cost leadership, or focusing on a niche market.

  3. Resource Allocation: Strategic planning helps businesses allocate their limited resources more effectively. By prioritizing initiatives that offer the highest returns, businesses can maximize their impact and avoid wasted efforts. Best way to avoid that ‘shiny new toy’!

How to Start Developing a Business Strategy:

  1. Define Your Strategic Purpose.

  2. Conduct a SWOT Analysis - another one of those things that gets an eye roll!

  3. Set Goals - get specific and measurable.

  4. Outline the specific actions you will take to achieve your goals.

Implementing a business strategy can seem daunting, but it’s a crucial step toward sustainable growth and success. As your consultant, I am here to guide you through this process and help tailor a strategy that fits your unique needs and goals.
